This sound can mean a loose internal part inside the compressor housing, or it can mean the compressor is beginning to fail altogether. Do not keep running the system if you’re hearing a hard bang on every cycle. A compressor that’s struggling draws extra current, stresses the capacitor, and can take other parts down with it. Hissing or Bubbling: A Refrigerant Leak
A steady hiss from the refrigerant lines or around the indoor coil typically indicates refrigerant escaping through a crack or a failed fitting. A bubbling or gurgling sound from the same area usually means refrigerant is moving past a restriction with air mixed in – a sign the system is low on charge. Refrigerant isn’t dangerous to stand near in small amounts, but a system running low on charge will freeze the coil, overheat the compressor, and stop cooling your home effectively. This repair requires a licensed technician with recovery equipment – it’s not a homeowner fix, and adding refrigerant without finding and sealing the leak just delays the same problem.

- Identify the sound first. Stand near the outdoor condenser, then near the indoor air handler, and note where the noise is loudest and what it sounds like. A short voice memo on your phone is a good way to capture it – it helps the technician before they even arrive.
