What’s Happening
A frozen A/C coil almost always means your system isn’t moving enough heat away from the evaporator - usually because airflow is restricted, refrigerant is low, or both. The ice you’re seeing is the symptom, not the problem itself. Turn the system off now, because running it while the coil is frozen will burn out the compressor, and that’s a far more expensive repair than whatever caused the ice.
When your evaporator coil gets cold enough to drop below freezing, moisture in the air condenses on it and turns to ice instead of draining away as it should. A light frost might look harmless, but it’s a signal that something in the refrigeration cycle is already wrong. Left running, the ice builds until it blocks airflow completely, the coil can’t do its job, and warm air blows from your vents even though the system is running hard. In the worst cases the ice spreads down the refrigerant lines all the way to the outdoor unit.
Why It Happens
Restricted Airflow From a Clogged Filter
This is the most common cause by a wide margin. When the air filter is clogged, the blower can’t pull enough warm air across the coil, so the coil temperature drops below freezing and ice forms. Pull your filter out right now. If you’re holding it up to a light and can’t see through it, that’s your answer. Replace it with the same size and MERV rating that was already in the slot.
Low Refrigerant Charge
Refrigerant doesn’t burn off or evaporate on its own – it leaks. A slow leak drops the pressure inside the evaporator coil, which causes the refrigerant to expand too quickly and get abnormally cold. You can’t see refrigerant and you can’t measure pressure without gauges, but the clues are warm air blowing from the vents even after the ice melts, a hissing or bubbling sound near the air handler, or ice appearing again shortly after a thaw. This one requires a technician. Refrigerant handling is federally regulated, and adding refrigerant without finding and fixing the leak is a temporary patch at best.
Blocked or Closed Supply Registers
Every register in your house that’s closed or blocked by furniture, drapes, or stored boxes reduces the total airflow your system was sized to move. Walk through the house and open every supply register fully. If a room is being “shut off” from the system to save energy, it’s actually doing the opposite – it’s starving the coil of the airflow it needs and inviting a freeze-up.
A Failing Blower Motor or Dirty Evaporator Coil
If your filter is clean and your registers are open but the system still froze, look at the air handler itself. A failing blower motor may run but move far less air than it should. You might hear it humming without the full rush of air you’d normally feel at the vents. A coil that’s never been cleaned can also accumulate enough dust and grime on its fins to choke airflow just as effectively as a dirty filter. Both of these need a technician to sort out properly.
What to Do Right Now
- Turn the system to “fan only” or shut it off at the thermostat. Do not run cooling mode while ice is present. The compressor is not designed to pump refrigerant through a frozen coil and you risk damaging it.
- Check and replace the air filter. Locate the filter slot at the air handler or the return air grille, pull it out, and look at it. If it’s gray and dense, replace it before you do anything else. Write the date on the new one.
- Open all supply registers throughout the house. Every room, every register, fully open. This costs nothing and solves the problem if restricted airflow was the only cause.
- Let the coil thaw completely before restarting. Place a few old towels around the base of the air handler to catch drip water. This can take two to four hours depending on how much ice built up. Don’t rush it with a heat gun.
- Take photos before the ice melts. A photo of the frozen coil, the filter you pulled out, and the model plate on your equipment gives the technician useful information before they even arrive and speeds up the diagnosis.
