  • Elite Series (XP16, XP14, EL16XP1): Two-stage and single-stage units, 2010-present. The reversing valve coil on these is a 24V, 3-watt part, but the mounting bracket changed in 2016. Check your serial number: pre-2016 units use a four-bolt pattern, post-2016 use two bolts with a clip.
  • Merit Series (14HPX, 13HPX, ML14XP1): Entry-level single-stage units. These are more forgiving with aftermarket parts, though we still source the defrost sensor from the OEM because the resistance curve (10K ohm at 77°F) must match exactly or you’ll get false defrost cycles.

To identify your model, read the metal label on the outdoor unit’s back panel, not the homeowner brochure. The model number starts with the series code, followed by tonnage and SEER rating. If the label’s faded from Lancaster’s summer humidity, we can pull the spec from Lennox’s database with the serial number.

Signs Your Lennox Heat Pump Service Is Failing

  • Cool air in heat mode, but the outdoor unit’s running. This usually points to a stuck reversing valve. The valve shifts refrigerant flow between heating and cooling, and Lancaster’s hard water mineral buildup can seize the slide mechanism inside. You’ll hear the compressor running, but the copper line at the indoor coil stays lukewarm.
  • Unit short-cycles every 3-5 minutes. A failing defrost board or sensor tells the system it’s freezing up when it isn’t, triggering unnecessary defrost cycles. In Lancaster’s damp shoulder seasons, this wears out the compressor contactor prematurely.
  • Loud humming or buzzing from the outdoor unit, but no fan spin. The capacitor has weakened. A weak capacitor strains the compressor and can trigger the high-pressure switch.
  • Ice buildup on the outdoor coil in October or April. Normal defrost should clear this in under 10 minutes. If ice persists, the defrost thermostat or board has failed. We’ve found this especially common on units installed before 2010, where the original defrost algorithm was timed rather than demand-based.
  • Error code E201, E250, or flashing LED on the control board. These are Lennox-specific communication faults between the outdoor board and indoor thermostat. The XP25’s inverter board is particularly sensitive to voltage fluctuation, and Lancaster’s rural fringe areas see more of this than the city grid.
