Low Refrigerant (Refrigerant Leak)
Refrigerant doesn’t get “used up” the way fuel does – if the charge is low, there’s a leak somewhere in the system. Low refrigerant means the unit can’t transfer heat effectively, so it runs and runs trying to hit a number it simply can’t reach. You might notice ice forming on the copper lines near the outdoor unit, or the air coming out of your vents is only slightly cooler than room temperature even after an hour of running.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil inside your air handler can freeze solid if airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low – and a frozen coil can’t absorb heat from your home’s air at all. If you see frost or ice on the indoor unit or on the refrigerant lines running to it, that’s a frozen coil. Don’t chip at it. Shut the system off, let it thaw with the fan running on “fan only” mode, and call for service – because whatever caused it to freeze will freeze it again.
Undersized System or Extreme Heat Load
Sometimes the unit runs constantly not because anything is broken, but because the system was never big enough for the space it’s cooling – or because an unusually hot stretch of weather is pushing heat gain beyond what the equipment can handle. If your AC has always run long cycles on hot days and you’ve never had a professional load calculation done on your home, this is worth asking about. A system that runs 15-18 hours on a 95-degree day may simply need to be right-sized.

- Check and replace your air filter. Find the return-air grille (usually a large vent on a wall or ceiling) or the slot on your air handler. If the filter is visibly dirty, swap it for a fresh one of the same size. This takes two minutes and occasionally solves the problem on the spot.
- Set the thermostat to “Fan Only” if you see ice. If you spot frost on the indoor unit or the copper refrigerant lines, turn the system off at the thermostat and switch the fan to “on” so it runs without cooling. This lets the ice thaw safely. Do not try to remove the ice yourself.
- Take a photo of whatever looks wrong. A picture of the frozen coil, the ice on the lines, or the filter you just pulled gives your technician useful information before they even open the service panel. It only takes a few seconds and helps diagnosis move faster.
- Check your outdoor unit for obvious blockages. Grass clippings, leaves, or debris packed against the condenser coil outside will reduce the unit’s ability to shed heat. You can gently clear debris from around the unit, but do not spray water into it or attempt to clean the fins yourself – the fins are sharp and the electrical components inside are live. If the unit looks clear and clean, the problem is likely elsewhere.
