What’s Happening
When your air conditioner is running but blowing warm air, the most common causes are a refrigerant problem, a dirty air filter choking airflow, or a frozen evaporator coil – any of which can show up on the hottest afternoon of the year. In most cases, a trained technician can diagnose and correct the issue in a single visit.
Your system is doing one of two things: it’s either moving air but failing to cool it, or something is blocking airflow badly enough that cool air never reaches the vents. Both feel the same to you standing in front of a register. The distinction matters because the fix is different. A refrigerant leak means the system has lost its ability to absorb heat. A clogged filter or frozen coil means the cooling is happening, but it can’t get where it needs to go. A failed compressor is less common but more serious – it’s the heart of the outdoor unit, and when it stops, nothing works. Why It Happens
Low or Leaking Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the substance that actually pulls heat out of your indoor air. When the level drops – almost always because of a leak somewhere in the line set or coil – your system can run all day without doing much cooling. A few signs that point this direction: ice forming on the copper line that runs to the outdoor unit, a hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor air handler, or a system that cools weakly in the early morning but can’t keep up by afternoon. Refrigerant doesn’t just evaporate on its own – if it’s low, there’s a leak, and simply adding more without finding it is a temporary fix at best.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
The evaporator coil sits inside your air handler and is where refrigerant absorbs heat from your home’s air. If airflow across that coil drops too low – usually because of a severely clogged filter, a closed supply register, or a blower problem – the coil gets too cold and freezes over. Once it’s encased in ice, air can’t pass through it at all, so you get warm air or almost no air from the vents. You may also notice water pooling around the base of the indoor unit as the ice melts. If you pull the filter and it looks like gray felt, a frozen coil is a reasonable first guess.
Thermostat or Electrical Issue
Sometimes the problem isn’t mechanical at all. If the thermostat is set to “fan only” rather than “cool,” the system will circulate air without running the compressor – meaning it’ll blow air that’s close to room temperature and feel warm on a hot day. Check that the thermostat is set to “cool” and the set-point is actually below the current room temperature. Beyond that, tripped circuit breakers, a blown capacitor on the outdoor unit, or a failed contactor can all cause the compressor to stop running while the blower keeps going. The outdoor unit running quietly or not at all while the indoor fan is on is a good clue that the electrical side needs a look.
Dirty or Failing Compressor
The compressor in your outdoor unit pressurizes the refrigerant so the whole cooling cycle can function. It takes the most punishment of any component – it runs in direct heat, through summer after summer, and eventually wears out. A compressor that’s struggling may still run but produce noticeably less cooling, or it may shut down on high-heat days and restart at night when temperatures drop. Loud grinding, rattling, or hard-start sounds from the outdoor cabinet can point here. What to Do Right Now
- Check the thermostat first. Make sure it’s set to “cool” – not “fan only” – and that the temperature set-point is lower than the current room reading. It’s a simple check and it rules out the most correctable cause in thirty seconds.
- Pull the air filter and look at it. If it’s visibly clogged with dust and debris, replace it with a clean one before the technician arrives. A severely restricted filter can cause a frozen coil, and giving the system a fresh filter helps it recover faster.
- Check your circuit breaker panel. A tripped breaker to the air handler or outdoor condenser will cause exactly this symptom. Reset it once if it’s tripped – but if it trips again immediately, leave it off and call us. A breaker that won’t hold is telling you something, and repeatedly resetting it can damage equipment or create a fire hazard.
- Look at the outdoor unit from a safe distance. Notice whether the fan is spinning, whether ice is visible on the copper refrigerant lines, or whether the unit sounds different than usual – grinding, rattling, or unusually quiet. Take a quick photo on your phone. That information helps the technician before they even open the service panel.
- Turn the system off and let it rest if you suspect a frozen coil. Switch the thermostat to “off” and run the fan on “fan only” for an hour or two. This lets the coil thaw. Do not chip at ice on the coil or refrigerant lines yourself – the components underneath are delicate and the refrigerant lines carry pressure. Let it thaw on its own, then call.
